The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame - 2150 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. N

Over the last thirty-five years, the ASHOF has become the benchmark for other Sports Museums across the country, with over 5,000 sports artifacts elegantly displayed in the 33,000 square foot building. Out of ESPN’s list of the top 100 athletes of the century, five out of the top fifteen greatest ever are in the ASHOF: Jesse Owens, Hank Aaron, Joe Louis, Willie Mays, and Carl Lewis.

Ruffner Mountain Nature Center - 1214 81st Street South

Ruffner Mountain Nature Center is a 1,011 acre natural oasis located on one of the last undeveloped stretches of the Red Mountain ridge known as Ruffner Mountain. Just a 10 minute escape from downtown Birmingham, AL, feels like a world away. Enjoy a short stroll or explore the mountain for an all day adventure. Miles of peaceful forested trails with surprising biodiversity, wetlands teaming with wildlife, remnants of our past mining history, and spectacular views from several overlooks await those who venture out.

Rickwood Field - 1137 Second Avenue West

Built in 1910 for in the city’s then-professional baseball team, the Coal Barons, Rickwood Field is being restored to look the way it did in its 1940s heyday, all the way down to the hand-operated scoreboard. Wearing old-time uniforms, the Birmingham Barons play the annual Rickwood Classic. Baseball greats who played at Rickwood include Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb and Birmingham’s own Burleigh Grimes, the last legal spitball pitcher in the big leagues. Rickwood was also home to the Birmingham Black Barons Negro League team, which brought the likes of Satchel Paige, Piper Davis and local teenage phenomenon Willie Mays to play here.

The Southern Museum of Flight - 4343-73rd Street North

The Southern Museum of Flight is dedicated to presenting civilian, military, and experimental aircraft and memorabilia from the earliest history of powered flight. The 68,000 square foot facility houses over 75 aircraft, as well as engines, models, artifacts, photographs, and paintings. In addition, the Southern Museum of Flight is home to the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame with over 65 biographical plaques presenting Alabama aviation history through collective biography.
