We were stuck what to do for Easter Sunday as most things are closed and as it was such a beautiful day we decided to go to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. There had been a lot of media coverage last year about how they had rescued a group lions from a run down zoo in Romania and the park was unique as it offered a walkthrough experience. When we got there, I was quite surprised to find there were no queues (we did get there about 1pm). There was just the 4 of us this time, the eldest didn’t want to come:( The cost for the 4 of us was £42, there was no discount for families and children were classed as 3 – 15 years.
On arrival the first thing we saw were the meerkats and mongoose, these were adorable and great to watch. There were rabbits, sheep, goats and chickens around here that the children were able to go up to and stroke. On leaving that area we went on a woodland walk through Lemur woods, the walk was quite nice and it was good to see the Lemur playing around and they seemed very tame too, allowing people to stroke them (under the rangers supervision). We continued on to the Wallaby walkabout, passing by the river hogs (with faces only a mother could love) . There was a big climbing area in the woods for the kids which they enjoyed but it was very busy. After this, we approached the African Plains, it was apparent that this was still being constructed, there were areas that had signs showing what was being built. We passed a group of camels and followed everyone else towards the tiger enclosure. There is apparently a tiger there, but after standing there searching for 20 mins we didn’t see it After looking for the tiger, we then had to double back and continue on to the Cattle, Zebra & Ostrich that were in a big field and were so far out, we could hardly see them. We could look through telescopes for an extra 50p.
On to Lion country, the bit everyone was waiting for! We saw the lions but of course they are nocturnal so they just slept, the highlight was one lifting up its head for 2 minutes but they were good to see. There was also a timetable to see other events like animals up close and a flying display.
All in all the children enjoyed it but I didn’t feel like it was value for money. There didn’t seem to be enough to see and what we could see, weren’t close enough. The good thing was the animals had plenty of space and seemed happy in their surroundings.
Would I go back? At the moment, no. Maybe when they have eventually finished it we will go back but for now I’d rather pay that little bit more and go to Knowsley Safari Park or West Midlands Safari Park, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park walkthrough experience to be honest, wasn’t that much of an experience
P.S When will these type of parks realise that families would appreciate family ticket discounts, it gets expensive when you have more than 1 child!
